Childbirth Connection is a national not-for-profit organization that uses research, education and advocacy to improve maternity care for all women and their families.  Founded in 1918 as Maternity Center Association, Childbirth Connection has grown from a small group of concerned individuals and community leaders that succeeded in reducing maternal and infant deaths in New York City to a nationally recognized leader in maternity care quality improvement. Childbirth Connection is a voice for the needs and interests of childbearing families. Our mission is to promote safe, effective and satisfying evidence-based maternity care.

Please visit the About Us section of our website for information on our vision, mission and beliefs and our history.  Our most recent program initiatives are listed below, and the individual pages provide more information and links to related information on this site.

For more information or to arrange an interview about evidence-based maternity care topics and issues, please contact Maureen P. Corry, Executive Director, at corry@childbirthconnection.org or 212-777-5000 x4.

Inside Childbirth Connection's Press Room:

Cesarean Alert Initiative

Cesarean section is on the rise in the U.S. About 1 woman in 3 now gives birth by major surgery.  Childbirth Connection carried out the first in-depth review of the relevant research to identify all adverse effects in mothers and babies that are more likely with a cesarean or a vaginal birth. A booklet based on the results, What Every Pregnant Woman Needs to Know About Cesarean Section, helps pregnant women understand the key results from the research review on harms of different ways of giving birth and provides evidence-based tips for women who wish to avoid unnecessary cesareans. Childbirth Connection also fills gaps in knowledge about women's cesarean-related views and experiences through its Listening to Mothers surveys. The goal of this in initiative is to raise awareness and educate the public about the importance of using the best research to guide personal decision making, policy making and maternity care practice.

Listening to Mothers Initiative

Childbirth Connection's Listening to Mothers Initiative is devoted to understanding experiences and perspectives of childbearing women and using this knowledge to improve maternity policy, practice, education and research. Listening to Mothers surveys are central to this initiative. Our landmark Listening to Mothers I survey (2002) was the first time that women in the United States were surveyed at the national level about their maternity experiences. Results of Listening to Mothers II (2006) are now available and continue to break new ground. A follow-up survey about the postpartum experiences of Listening to Mothers II participants will be reported in spring 2007.

Labor Pain Initiative

Labor pain is a matter of great concern to the 4 million U.S. women who give birth annually, yet controversy and incomplete knowledge about methods to relieve it still exist. Childbirth Connection's Labor Pain Initiative helps ensure that women and their caregivers have access to the best research on the safety and effectiveness of available methods for relieving labor pain, and that women have access to a full array of drug and non-drug pain relief methods.

Labor Support Initiative

Continuous support during labor - by providing emotional support, comfort measures, and information - offers women many benefits and has no known downsides. This initiative helps increase women's access to and understanding of the positive impact of continuous care from a supportive companion during labor. Childbirth Connection participated in a comprehensive systematic review of better-quality studies that describe the experiences of nearly 13,000 women. This review found that women who receive supportive care from a companion throughout labor are more likely than women without such care to avoid cesarean birth and other major medical interventions and to be satisfied with their birth experience.

"I didn't know I had legal rights, but I felt I could ask questions and refuse procedures."
-Listening to Mothers® survey participant
Every woman and infant has the right to receive care that is consistent with current scientific evidence about benefits and risks. Practices that have been found to be safe and beneficial should be used when indicated. Harmful, ineffective, or unnecessary practices should be avoided. Unproven interventions should be used only in the context of research to evaluate their effects.
